Can anyone run a Carfax or similar for me? I’m going to look at a Miata to possibly purchase tomorrow, but I’m being given pause by one inconsistency from the free VIN decoders I’ve been using.

The free VIN decoders keep saying the car is an 95 M-Edition, but it lacks almost all the equipment and paint of an M of that year. While it’s feasible that someone removed the leather seats, Nardi equipment, and wheels, the car doesn’t appear to have been resprayed, so far as I can tell from the pictures. I’m baffled, and also poor. Paying 40 bucks for a single Carfax would mean I’d be eating cheerios for the next few days.

Listed at 4k OBO with a hardtop. Doing a bit of digging, I’ve discovered that all 95s show as M-Editions when the VIN is run, so that question is out of the way.

Welp unfortunately he just told me the car was sold, an hour after I set up a time to meet up with him.

This is the second time that’s happened to me in a day. And I got a speeding ticket. Fucking hell.

It took me six months to find the right Miata at the right price for me. It’s likely you’ll want to run more than 1 Vin through CarFax.

That said; only reported accidents, and professional repairs will show up on CarFax.

If someone autocrosses, wrecks, and fixes it themselves it won’t be on the CarFax.

If you find a car you’re serious about you’d be best off having a pro inspect it.

Lot of great Miatas out there, but a lot of bent and rusted crap too. If you plan to keep it for a while take your time and get the right one.

Good luck.

I found a great one once. Low mileage adult owned 93, no rust at all, well maintained, never went wrong once. It was wrecked by some idiot douchebag in a Jeep.

Hate to say it but running the VIN on older Miatas is pretty futile. Just about all have been swapped around. Most that should have a Torsen LSD by VIN don’t and such. Best approach is just to inspect them thoroughly in person, and know what you are looking for.

It took longer than I thought it would, but it was with the wait.

I wanted a NA but in the Midwest nice ones were too expensive and the rest had rust or needed mechanical work I wasn’t prepared to do.

Ended up with a nice NB with a hardtop and rollbar.

Be patient. You’ll find the one.
